Welcome to Funen in Denmark

Funen is an idyllic island with romantic castles and mansions framed in an incredibly beautiful nature.

This fairytale island is the birthplace of the world renown author Hans Christian Andersen. You can still today see the house, where he was born, and in the city, you also find an interesting museum about his life.

The island of Funen is placed in the centre of Denmark, connected to Zealand and Jutland by two bridges, the Little Belt Bridge and the Great Belt Bridge. The main city on the island is Odense.

It is possible to follow the "footsteps" of Hans Christian Andersen all over Funen, and also visit some of the castles, where he has written some of his fairy tales.

Beautiful old castles

The Island of Funen is also combined with many historic buildings and traditions. Many beautiful castles and parks are located here like Nyborg Castle, Egeskov Castle,  Holckenhavn Castle or Lykkesholm Castle to mention some. Especially Egeskov Castle with a car museum and a family amusement park is much recommended.

Discover the many activities

Funen offers all kinds of fun and activities all year around. In the open-air museum Den Fynske Landsby (Funen Village), you can try out and experience the way of living at the time, when Hans Christian Andersen lived.

Odense Zoo is a real family highlight and highly respected for their animal collection.

In the summer adventures like sailing, kayaking, and especially bicycling is very popular on Funen, where there are several beautiful biking routes. Funen is also a paradise for anglers and yachtsmen.

Funen is only 2 hours drive from Copenhagen

By car or train, you can easily reach Funen from Copenhagen or other places in Denmark. Funen is linked to Zealand by the Store Bælt bridge and by the Lille Bælt bridge to Jutland, and E20 runs across Funen.

You can also go to Odense from Copenhagen every hour by train.
