The Gota Canale Region

Get a unique impression about the idyllic heartland of Sweden by visiting the Göta Canal.

History

The construction of the Göta Canal took 22 years, beginning in 1810 by Baltzar von Platen. The idea of the canal was born out of anger by the heavy duties exacted by Denmark for using the Great Belt for shipping.

The Göta Canal is 190 km in length including 58 locks, and the canal stretches from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem on the Baltic. Göta Canal is the greatest construction project ever in Sweden. This remarkable waterway is one of the communication links between Sweden's two largest cities.

Göta Canale offers

Watch the fascinating historical locks in action, which is crucial for the traffic in the Gota Canale. Stay in one of the local historic hotels, and enjoy one of the many restaurants and music evenings.

Along the Gota Canale, you will find unique hiking and biking trails as well as activities like fishing or canoeing. You will never look long for a perfect spot for a picnic along the canal. Are you in a cultural mode the region attracts by beautiful historic manors and castles, but also exciting museums.

Take a canal cruise

A cruise on one of canal ships is like journeying into another world. You turn off your mobile phone, leave the stress of everyday life behind, and give yourself a few days of total relaxation with good food, beautiful nature, clean air, interesting encounters and rewarding conversations.

The Göta Canal is open from early May to the end of September every year.
